Cocoa Village 5k River Run September 2, 1985-- Cocoa, Fl Small Wins Big in 5k run. by Eric Garwood FLORIDA TODAY It was a day for coaches at the Cocoa Village 5k River Run on Monday. Florida Institute of Technology cross country Coach Jeff Small led the 349 runner field along the Rockledge Drive course and crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, four seconds. Brevard Community College assistant cross country coach Delight Chambers was the first woman to finish, five seconds in front of Laura Finch, a BCC runner. Chambers, a 24-year old Merritt Island resident, ran the course in 19:50. Hot, muggy weather kept race times slow, but several runners said times could have been worse if it had not been for an abundance of shade along the course. "That time is about 30 seconds off my best," said Small, 27, of Indialantic. "It's a nice course, it was just real hot out there" Small, who moved to the area from Winter Park last December, started near the front of the pack and worked himself into the lead just beyond the quarter-mile mark. Once out front, Small said no serious challenges came his way. Chambers told a different story. Running with Finch, for a while, the coached almost beat the coach. That wouldn't have mattered, she said. "I'd be happy if they beat me," she said. "I'm a coach, that's what I'm here for." Several cross country teams, including BCC, Cocoa Beach and Rockledge, used the River Run as a tune-up for upcoming seasons. Race officials said a field of 15 wheelchair division racers were expected to compete Monday. Two athletes actually took the starting gun. Bob Dyal won the title. In a second article, there was a story of Robyn Wood a 7 year old, running up and down the Melbourne Causeway training for a hilly 10k race in Alabama. Robyn from Melbourne held at that time 9 age group records and her brother Rusty, age 4, held 2 national age-group records. Rusty and Robin both ran the Cocoa Village River Run.
