9th Annual Wuesthoff Set The Pace Classic 5K March 7th, 1987--Rockledge Fl. Trainor sets pace at Wuesthoff's 5-Kilometer run by Bob Chaille FLORIDA TODAY Distance running takes dedication. It took a bit more than dedication Saturday for the 380 runners that ran through driving rain and 35 mile per hour winds at the ninth annual Wuesthoff Set The Pace Classic in Rockledge Former Rockledge High School runner William Trainor, who is now a senior at the University of South Florida, came home with a in front of the field with a time of 16:04 "I was planning on going for a good time in the run, but then knew that would be an impossibility with the weather," Trainor said I got a little tight about midway through the race, but it was a comfortable run." It was a setup for Trainor, who finished second last year to World Class runner Craig Virgin. Trainor's finish last year earned him the No. 1 as his race number, and Trainor lived up to the number with his first place finish by about 200 yards against former Astronaut high. school runner Doug Overfelt, who finished in 16:39. Three seconds back in third place was Michael Cain at 16:53. Florida Southern sophomore Paige Dempsey barely edged out Kim McAliley of Melbourne Beach in the women's field. Dempsey a former Cocoa Beach High School runner who now runs cross country for Florida Southern, clocked in at 20:07. McAliley was at 20:09. Cindy Wright, who had finished second last year was third with a 20:28 time. McAliley, a Palm Bay elementary school teacher who started running to help herself quit smoking, took the lead at the two mile mark and held it until the final 100 yards when Dempsey sprinted past her to a 10-yard victory. "I really like running in conditions like today. I've run in similar weather during a cross country meet, but never quite this bad," Dempsey said. "I was shooting for running it in under 19 minutes." The weather did become bad enough to force the cancellation of the quarter-mile kiddie run. In the high school division, Rockledge runner Kim Lockwood won the women's division with a 90th place overall and a clocking of 20:48. Melbourne High School junior Alfred Dujovne led the boy's high school division with an eighth place overall and 17:08 time. The oldest participant braving the elements was 82-year-old John R Miranda of Merritt Island, who was in the non-competitive 1-mile walk. Race Director Terry Rexrode said," We had 575 pre-race entries and 380 of them showed up. With the weather like it was, I think our race was very successful." Top three by division MEN OVERALL 01.
