HMRC HEART RUN-February 27,1988 Melbourne, Fl - 5K Residents put their hearts into Heart Run by Roni Bea Kayne FLORIDA TODAY Harold Tucker points to the scar running down the left side of his neck. That was were cancer was removed five years ago. On Saturday , he and 181 other people were running in the 1988 5k Heart Run to promote Holmes Regional Medical Center's heart center. Tucker, 70, of Melbourne Beach, was the oldest male runner. He said he ran while receiving radiation treatment, and "I was right back running after it was over." To keep in shape, he enters a race almost every weekend. Today he will race a 10K in Vero Beach. "I knew a man who ran a 50K after he had a heart attack and bypass (surgery). He runs 30 miles a week---no problem." The youngest runners were sisters, Jeni, Jil and Jeni Christiansen, ages 6, 4, and 3, respectively, who finished 1-2-3 in the female 10 and under division. "Those little girls passed me," Tucker said. Running partners George Bampton, 67 and Pat Marshall, 61, both of Melbourne, were male and female winners in their age group. "We run every other day 10 miles- five miles to McDonald's and five miles back," Marshall said. "We're McDonald's runners." Bampton runs marathons, which are more than 26 miles." I've never run a short distance. I had to run faster and I didn't get a second wind like I do in the long races. This was the fastest I've ever gone before." The first runner to cross the finish line was Jym Cotton, 21, a student at Brevard Community College. "I woke up this morning and felt bad. That's how things work. I usually do better when I feel bad." before the race, Cotton said. Among the more familiar faces in the race were Brevard County Commissioner Thad Altman and Circuit Judge John Antoon, who said they were running for a good cause. "Besides, it's the safest place to run with physicians all around," Altman said. And after the race: "I survived.I'm happy." TOP 3 OVERALL MALE 01. Jym Cotton 15:58 02. Peter Gelzinis 16:46 03.
