SPACE COAST RUNNERS 50K (The minus 6 degree wind chill race) COCOA BEACH, FL.- December 24, 1989 RACE RESULTS --- Revels & Borell Space Coast Runners 50K: My utmost respect goes to those 9 individuals and 8 team members who braved what was possibly the most miserably cold day in space coast history and participated in the 12th annual Cocoa Beach Ultra Marathon. On Sunday, December 24, the temperature was 22 degrees with a wind chill of minus 6 at the start. I'm sure most of you remember that day (from the relative warmth of your home that is) It was reported that in places, the ocean had frozen where circulation was cutoff. YOUCH ! wake me when it's over. Foul weather the day before, last minute attacks of sanity (and a few frozen door locks) kept attendance low but outstanding performances were put in by all who competed. And special praise for the volunteers who were there to help out. The race, which is the world's longest beach run, always tests the competitor's stamina and strength of will and this year it worked overtime. Tim Fortier won the men's race in a time of 4:14:10 with Dick Whitmore a mear 5 minutes behind in 4:19:09 (knocking 34 minutes off his PR from last year). Pat Dixon won the women's race in a time of 6:42:42. GFR Males 01. Tim Fortier (25) 4:14:10 Daytona Beach, Fl 02. Dick Whitmore (42) 4:19:09 Indialantic, Fl 03.
