SPACE COAST MARATHON - February 18,1990 Melbourne, Fl Race Results - Revels & Borell Space Coast Marathon: It appears that the 1989-1990 Space Coast Racing season is going to be remembered for the extremes in weather (especially in the longer distances). The 50k was about as cold as it gets in these here parts and the marathon was about as hot (at least for this time of year). Not only was it too hot to run the distance, at times it was too hot to be just sitting around watching it. There was a mild breeze but I'm sure it didn't help. Usually I have pangs of jealousy when I watch runners compete in a race that I'm missing. Not this year . Congratulations to all who ran and survived. In what might seem a paradox, the winner in the marathon came from Canada. (And he probably would have been more at home for the Ultra) Peter Maher, a member of the Canadian Olympic Marathon team, ran a 2:38:55 the day after running in another unseasonably hot race, Gaspearilla. Tony Coulson finished a distant second in 2:5627 followed by Al Baigent (also of Canada ) in 2:58:00. Jorge Abreu, running his first marathon, was the first Space Coast Runner in fourth with a time of 3:05:27. Margaret Mallett of Ft.Lauderdale was the first woman overall with a time of 3:14:53. Kathy Cesaro was second in 3:24:01 and Kathleen Kaye was third in 3:27:21. Nancy Huy was the first local female finishing in a time of 3:37:45. Despite the heat, several runners ran well enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon. There were 8 men and 5 women. This lists includes Brevard area runners Tony Coulson of Merritt Island, Jorge Abreu of Cocoa, Mark James of Satellite Beach, and Nancy Huy of Melbourne. Congratulations to you all. - GFR Understanding the Space Coast Marathon A couple of hundred runners came to experience the Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon in Melbourne on February 18. I came not to run, but to escort Carlos Talbott, last years marathon winner, along with four other riders from the Palm Bay Bicycle Club. Talbott is blind. I rode out just ahead of the lead runners as they turned onto Wickham Road. "One mile, 5:46", I called out. We rode ahead, forced a car off the road. Another rider guided Talbott: "Left turn … now!" Talbott skirted the edge of the pavement. "Two miles, 11:28." "Water ahead of you on the left." Sometimes he would miss the water, and a rider would go back and get him a cup. Two runners were leading the race, Talbott and Peter Maher from the Canadian Olympic team, who had a 2:12:58 PR. Although several runners were close behind, they would turn around at 10 1/2 miles. The marathon and the half marathon started at the same time, and would follow the same course to that point. "Ten miles, 57:30." Talbott leads by seconds. "Half marathon, 1:16:30" Maher leads by ten feet. Several miles away Bill McCord would win the half marathon in 1:18:36. It is hot. The temperature climbs from 77 to 86 degrees, at 74 percent humidity. The sun beats down from a cloudless sky on unshaded asphalt. Fourteen miles. There is a wheelchair ahead. Fifteen miles. Talbott and Maher finally pass Max Rhodes, 76 years old, who had a 10 minute head start as the sole runner in the wheelchair division. Sixteen miles. Talbott stops momentarily for water and allows Maher to pass. Eighteen miles. Talbott stops again and Maher takes the lead for good. Nineteen miles. Talbott slows to a seven minute pace. Rhodes rolls past. Twenty mile water stop. Talbott quits, disappointed. "It was a good training run." I stay to hand out water while another volunteer drives him back to the start. Maher, now leading by more than a mile wins easily in 2:38:55. At the water station, a policeman asks if anyone has a tire pump. It turns out that Rhodes had a flat tire. In spite of a ten minute delay, he finishes fourth in 3:02:29. Four hours into the race, I rode the last half of the course to check on the last few runners. In last place, a women from Hawaii walked confidently. She had walked several marathons, all in 8 hours, and even planned a 100 mile walk. She was right on schedule at 13 miles. The next runner was five miles ahead, a man in his 50's. This was not his first marathon either, and he was confident he would finish. He was still confident when I last saw him:24 miles at 6 hours. The third runner was a different story. At 25 miles at 5:30, he walked so slowly that I had to get off my bike. He was younger, but obviously suffering: he was not sweating, he had vomited once. It wasn't because he hadn't prepared: He ran 50 miles a week, including a 22 mile training run last week. He drank water at every stop, and he felt fine for the first 14 miles. He was from Tampa, and had plenty of time to acclimate to the heat. "You really need to rest in the shade," I said. He gladly accepted a one mile ride back to the start. To understand a marathon, it is not enough just to run it. When I ran this race last year, I thought it was an experience of a lifetime. But as I watched this year from the best seats in the house, I realized that everyone experiences a marathon differently. Now I understand. FIRST PLACE WHEELCHAIR 01.
